Proper and appropriate citations and references are an important and necessary part of scientific papers, academic papers, books, dissertations, theses and many other documents across all disciplines and sources.
In general, there are two fundamental citation and reference systems:
In the Harvard system - citations consist of author name and publication date of a resource. The references list is in alphabetical order of author name and publication date.
In the Vancouver system - references in the document are consecutively numbered (usually in order of appearance). They are identified in parentheses (xxx), square brackets [xxx], superscript xxx or a combination [xxx]. The references list is in numerical order and should match the citations in the text.
Check References is a program for consistency checking of citations and references in a document according to the Vancouver system. The program automatically recognizes all references in the document and checks if references in the main document are matching with the references list.
